I love traditions, I always make an effort to keep up my family traditions. Over the years my family and I have developed many Super Bowl traditions. Now it is important to note that when it comes to the Super Bowl I have only really ever watched the games that the Kansas City Chiefs have played in from 2020 and on because I’m not a die hard football fan like the rest of my family. Our standard traditions after our move to Garden City in the summer of 2017 have included watching the game on the designated Sunday and each member of our family choosing and making a food of our choice. In the event the Chiefs are playing, my family wears our jerseys to church. However prior to that we had a party with the youth group my parents led where we would hang out, play games and of course watch the half time show. Every family has their own traditions of course and those are most likely equally as meaningful. Looking at this year it was a little different, it was the first year without my older brother and the vibe was definitely different however we still stuck to our tried and true. On the menu this year was chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, jalapèno poppers, various chips and dips and my food of choice spinach and artichoke dip pasta. Once our dinner was ready we all sat down and ate as we watched the game (this year I was watching the commercials) spending time together as a family. However the change in teams during the Super Bowl really showed me what the Sunday is really about for me. Super Bowl Sunday isn’t really just about the food or who’s playing; it’s about who you’re spreading it with. Throughout all of the different traditions over the years, it’s the people who made it truly memorable. Growing up I was always at the youth group party because my parents didn’t want to leave me at home alone and the youth group made sure I felt included and made sure I was always having fun. Or even if I didn’t care who was playing I still stayed up till the end of the game with my dad and talked about who the Most Valuable Player would be. I’ve never cared for sports like my family has but I always stick around to spend time with them. Traditions whether they are sports or holidays, the real reason they are important is because it’s who they are built with. As I gear up to leave for college I do wonder what’s in store for me and our Super Bowl Sunday traditions but I do know that all that matters is the people I spend my time with.
