Without a doubt AI has been integrated onto the internet in one way or another. One of the most well-known AI video maker apps, Sora AI, is shutting down due to bankruptcy. This app is known on TikTok for a series called “Fruit Love Island.” There are differing opinions on this app being closed down.
“Some of them are okay because they’re trying to teach a lesson or a theme. I think it gets bad when it’s an advertisement or when it says something like, ‘if you do this you won’t get Alzheimer’s,’ or ‘if you do this thing you’ll lose weight.’ I see a lot of older people getting tricked by these gimmicky video traps and I think that’s unfortunate,” Wendi Terpstra, English teacher, said.
AI has rapidly advanced and it can be hard to decipher which videos are real and which ones are not. These types of videos have begun to surface all over the internet, including many social media platforms.
“There’s a lot of Sora AI videos all over TikTok. I feel like these types of apps are affecting our environment along with our society. I feel like people are beginning to rely on AI too much and it seems like people are getting dumber with it,” Ricky Bailey, Health senior, said.
Reliance on artificial intelligence has had a definitive impact on society. With the growing dependency on AIs like ChatGPT, there has been a noticeable decrease in many brain functions.
“I think our Buffalo Broadcasting team has been able to do so many cool things. Things like that or school newspapers or yearbooks are in danger of being replaced. It can be so much easier to consume news in a video or to press play on an audiobook, but there are negative effects to these things slowly taking over. For example, we are not a very literate society. The brain is a muscle and if people aren’t using it, it’s going to lead to losing our literacy,” Terpstra said.
These effects are not just seen but can also be felt. Many creative professions and spaces have been invaded by AI.
“I feel like to most people, using AI just seems way easier but in reality, it takes out the emotion and hard work that it takes to make a video. I thought the videos were funny at first but then they just got tiring. I feel like AI is going to affect those wanting to go into creative professions because people will just want more AI material to watch or to see rather than wanting something handmade. They’d rather just see something a computer made than seeing something a human put hard work and effort into,” Bailey said.
AI generated media has almost become the new normal. This has created a society that seeks out quick results rather than the time that it takes for something to be created.
“Althought media is not that main career path I’m going into, it scares me for those who are. I think in the future AI will definitely replace some elements of editing, if not completely replace jobs when it comes to that field. I feel like no matter what, AI cannot be original human content. For example, back when Vine was a thing, it was classical and beautiful and there was nothing that could replace the heart that comes from human content. Sure the videos can be funny and entertaining but at the end of the day, it’s not going to create a lasting impression,” Josue Ventura, Arts & Comm. senior, said.
