Artificial Intelligence or more commonly known as A.I, a use of technology everyone should at least be aware of. However, the abuse and overuse of the ‘tool’ has become ridiculous. There is no reason a student should be using A.I for all of their assignments. Now students might think this is absolutely preposterous but I disagree. I’m not trying to be cocky but I’ve survived my whole high school career up to my Junior year without using A.I on any of my assignments. Even when it was a stressful week full of rehearsals and papers due I refused to have a machine beat me at my own talents. 

There are major repercussions to students caught using A.I and the work done lacks raw human thoughts. I’m no expert but true work is deeper and more exciting to read. I think people forget A.I is not a real person. If that Snapchat A.I looks like a friend or ChatGPT has helped students on countless assignments it doesn’t change the true laziness of using an A.I source. 

Additionally, I hate the common excuses of not being good at a skill or needing more help, well if they used their typing skills of texting a prompt to an A.I they can super easily use those fingers to search a YouTube tutorial for anything they need! Those idiots who can’t even complete an assignment without the help of A.I shouldn’t be called students as the word “student” originates from the Latin word “studēns”, which means “to study”. Now answer me this, what is a person using A.I not doing? That’s right! Studying! See? No A.I needed for that question. 

This opinion isn’t just to critique the students who use A.I but to also bring attention to the teachers who encourage the consumption of A.I. It is hypocritical to warn against the operation of A.I and then allow students to use it in other ways. For example, an English teacher can not punish students for having an A.I written essay but then suggest using A.I for generative art simply because a student might be good at drawing. A student might not be good at writing. Does that give an excuse for that student to use A.I for their writing?

However, I understand there are countless useful methods for using A.I and my opinion has nothing to do with students who genuinely use A.I with good intentions. Perhaps they struggle with coming up with creative titles or need to spruce up their word choice. I want to reiterate the dangers of abusing A.I. Though I have never intentionally used A.I, I can sympathize with the struggle of using A.I. School is physically, mentally and emotionally draining and that one assignment won’t matter in the long run. Yet, it could be the start to a dangerous addiction. It’s important to remember a student is always stronger than a computer.
