Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because of the amazing atmosphere it creates, especially through media. One of the best examples of this in my opinion is The Nightmare Before Christmas. While this Tim Burton classic is often the center of debate, I believe that the movie is more of a Halloween centric film, rather than a Christmas one. Tim Burton is known for his amazing art direction and this movie is no exception. The way Burton uses color and shape to create his worlds has always been unique, and that’s part of what makes this movie stand out so much visually. The other part is the fact that the movie is entirely stop motion. This technique was not completely unheard of back when the movie was released, but it was very uncommon for it to be used in big films, especially for the entire duration of the movie. I think the stop motion adds a level to the look and feel of the movie that it wouldn’t have otherwise. There is one major complaint I have about the movie however. I understand that the movie had to be marketed toward kids and a lot of people enjoy seeing it in movies, but I am personally not a fan of having a bunch of songs in movies. It always feels weird when a character breaks out into song in the middle of a scene, and this movie has multiple moments like that. Overall, I could do without certain aspects of the movie, but the movie was well made and is generally good.
