Casey’s, a gas station and convenience store famous for its pizza, opened up yet another location at 2880 East Schulman Avenue this January after their previous installment, which opened in March of 2023, was met with much success. The announcement on Facebook was met with many mixed reactions. While some people expressed their disdain for the overstimulation of the gas station market in Garden City, others expressed appreciation for the new Casey’s being located just off highway 50. 

“I don’t think we need more of these gas station restaurants, because a lot of people, when they go to Casey’s, aren’t necessarily going to Casey’s for gas. They’re going to Casey’s for the snacks and the pizza and all of the other things that Casey’s sells. I think we’re getting to what would be called a saturation point where there’s just too much for our area to hold on to,” Mark Niedomys, social studies teacher, said. 

Other recent gas station additions in the greater Garden City area include two Maverik’s and the addition of Black Bear Diner onto the truck stop. 

“I’ve never been to the new Casey’s yet, I’ve gone exclusively to the old one and I love it, but we do have a lot of gas stations and I’m starting to get concerned about the competing market… it just seems like there’s a lot of people competing for a market that isn’t that big,” Trell Baker, Public Service senior, said. 

The new Casey’s has lifted some of the load off of the old one according to Luke Bingham, Casey’s employee. 

“The other one is really busy so they usually have two people working the shift, but because the new one I work at now just opened, each shift has one person on it instead of two, because sales have been in a certain margin. I don’t think it was very necessary to build another one, it was probably just for their profit because the other one is pretty successful,” Bingham said. 

The new Casey’s will face more competition across the street from the already established Kwik Shop. 

“Really it’s easier to go into that one [the new Casey’s], because you can turn right instead of left, I think that where it’s at and [with] how much traffic goes through there, it’ll be just fine,” Baker said.
