With the festivities and traditions of Valentine’s Day comes the opportunity for club fundraisers. Clubs which participated in Valentine’s Day fundraisers include Vocal Jazz Choir, Art Club, HALO, and JROTC.
Every year the Acapella group for choir offers people the chance to purchase Singing Valentine’s.
“For Valentine’s Day our Vocal Jazz Choir went around both the high school and the community, singing Valentine’s Serenades to different community members,” Oliver Spencer, Health senior, said.
Singing Valentine’s allow students to express their feelings for others.
“I got to sit down in the chair and get sung to, which is kind of embarrassing. I think that’s the whole premise of the Singing Valentine, I got to stare at my friends that were singing to me, and attempt to make them break character, while I was being sung to, and I received a chocolate rose. It was very good,” Eleazar Sanchez, Health senior, said.
The Vocal Jazz Group were satisfied with the turnout of their fundraiser.
“Overall, [it was] very successful. We’re busy from the very beginning of the day until three. We have a full schedule and it ends up working well for us financially,” Spencer said.
Another group, Art Club creates bouquets of origami flowers to sell.
“We were selling people roses, which is one of our biggest fundraisers. We take and upcycle old books and create something really beautiful out of them. One of our best fundraisers, we always do really well with it,” Alberto Hernandez-Martinez, Art Club sponsor, said.
For the Art Club, the students take control of the Valentine’s Day fundraiser.
“It’s all student-led. They’re the ones that prep the materials, create the roses and create the posters for selling the roses. We just help facilitate some of the things, like making sure everyone knows the process when it comes to making them, and helping them keep track of their money. It all stays in the club and they use it for trips or anything else that they might need or want to do at art club,” Martinez said.
HALO also took the opportunity to fundraise during Valentine’s Day by selling keychains.
“We made keychains with initials. I think it went pretty well, I think we sold around 60. Initially we had clear acrylic plastic hearts, then we put the keychain part of it to attach it to things, and we put it on the heart. Then Miss Donce put the initials in the heart on it, and we took off the hearts and the initials. It was basically like a sticker and we just stuck them on the hearts and we put a little tassel on it. It was fun, easy work, but it took a while. The money will go to whenever we go to colleges and universities. I think it’s going to mainly go to the one that’s going to happen on March 31, when we go to KSU,” Roxana Villarreal, Arts & Comms. junior, said.
