There’s a new star in Hollywood who’s super talented, never seems to mess up lines and is getting the latest algorithm and excitement from all over the world. The catch, she is not real. Tilly Norwood, an AI actress, created to look, sound, and even act like a real person.
“I think with the advancement of AI, it’s creating a lack of need for human actors, editors and animators too, because why would somebody pay an editor if they can just tell AI to make them something?” Journie Wilson, Arts & Comm. sophomore, said.
Trained on millions of hours of human performances to help replicate perfect vocal delivery. She looks like a mix of a bunch of real life stars, and can ultimately be in any directed movie. AI is upcoming and starting to be used in movies and shows to save time or bring new ideas to life, but also raises a mix of concerns, questions and excitement about creativity with jobs and who owns an actor’s image.
“I think some major concerns are taking people out of their jobs, or some risks are experiencing malfunction problems or other things that can go wrong that you can’t fix in the long run,” Ava Spencer, Health sophomore, said.
As AI actors are reaching more and more attention outside of the acting industry, real human actors are becoming increasingly more aware and worried of how a fake actor is a threat to their careers. The ultimate fear is that AI is getting better and faster at replacing the need for talented people. Shifting the overall idea from if artificial intelligence will impact their careers to when. Spectators around the world are pointing out the risks, not just for the people but for the product itself.
“Storytelling is a human activity,” Eric Velander, 21st Century Journalism teacher, said.
“Those can’t be replaced, not the script, not the angles, not the performances, they just cannot be replaced.”
As a person who watches films every single day he argues that the genuine lived experience of a human is something an algorithm cannot replace, he even admitted that CGI is not worth watching and that he does not enjoy watching films that contain AI. Not everyone is buying into the idea that a computer can truly replace a real life person. Many believe that acting is about the human connection and emotion, not just the special effects of AI.
