Hamilton is one of the most popular musicals to this day, with around 2.7 million streams on Disney+, and having an estimated 10 million views on the live musical. The musical follows the life of one of the country’s founding fathers- Alexander Hamilton. It is extremely popular because of its upbeat songs and ambitious storytelling. To celebrate the musical’s tenth anniversary, it has come back out to thousands of theatres across the country.
“I like the fact that it is a musical about history, but it’s not just your basic musical. It has all types of musical styles and it’s just catchy and fun to sing along,” Andi Sobba, Arts & Comm. teacher, said.
Hamiltons creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, spent about seven years researching and writing Hamilton.
“Lin-Manuel Miranda did a lot of studying and research before he wrote it, so a lot of the information in there is definitely historically accurate. I am very excited for it to come out in theatres. In the theatre, you get the whole component of being around everyone else and experiencing it together,” Sobba said.
The musical has been featured in many trends on TikTok and Instagram, growing its popularity. Hamilton has thousands of teenagers across the U.S excited for an in-theater experience.
”I’m excited it’s back and it’s being accessed in the theater. I feel like it definitely gives a different experience to watch theater with all your friends. It gives you a different way to learn about history that’s not just like a textbook or in school, it definitely makes it interesting while keeping it historically accurate. It shows the more personal side of it and not just the war. I like how the music encapsulates the feelings of everything.” Diana Reyes-Olivas, Health Junior, said.
Hamilton is known for its unique style of music and way of showing emotions on the stage.
”I think Lin-Manuel Miranda portrays Hamilton’s life really well as a character in history. I think that Aaron Burr’s songs are really good, Leslie Odom Jr. is a really good singer, and his songs are written really well and they’re relatable. I like to listen to a few of the songs, but watching it is kind of hard because it’s three and a half hours long.” Lily Koksal, Health junior, said.
Hamilton’s attention on social media has grown both the play and music’s popularity.
”I think the trends are really funny. If people think the trends are funny, the play is also funny.”
