As a freshman, I remember feeling like I still have so many years ahead of me. So many years of school, so many years of responsibilities; yet I couldn’t wait to grow up and move on. With graduation quickly approaching, I have realized that I shouldn’t be anticipating what’s next over relishing in what’s happening now.
During my freshman honor’s English class, I remember being brought down to the publication room and getting a spiel on why I should join. I was immediately attracted to the idea of writing for the newspaper so that’s what I applied for. However, I was in for a rude awakening. Getting used to writing stories so often while also juggling photo opps was jarring to say the least. I was heavily debating turning in my letter of resignation, but I decided to stick it out one more year. That was the best possible decision I could have ever made. This class quickly became a safe space where I could talk and laugh with my friends freely. One of my favorite memories is from the JEA Philadelphia room. We were all playing card games in the mezzanine and after, we decided to explore the hotel (while we were supposed to be in our rooms). We decided to go up to the top floor and we ended up in the ice room looking out the window. The view of the city while being surrounded by my friends will always be a precious memory to me.
Now as a senior with all these years behind me I think back to that freshman who couldn’t get out of here fast enough. I could not be more grateful for the lessons and memories that these four years have brought me. My support system of my parents, teachers and growing faith has been a cornerstone along the way. High school has not only provided me with a valuable education but also with many unforgettable experiences.
