My time at Garden City High School continues to get shorter as graduation gets closer. It feels like I was just walking into school for the first time, trying to figure out where to go. There are many things that I wished I did throughout my years here, whether it was joining more sports, or attending more games, but there are a few things I am glad I am a part of. My Freshman year I was a part of Honors English with Mr. Nelson. Towards the end of the year he introduced us to publications. I was not very sure about joining, but I became pretty fond of Sugar Beet and the people in it. Some of my most cherished experiences in Sugar Beet are the trips we took. One of my favorites was going to Philadelphia. Not only was I able to learn more about publications, editing, and writing, but we also were able to go to many famous and unique places like the Love statue and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After my first year in Sugar Beet, I applied and became the Sports Editor. Not only did I learn technical skills, but I learned how amazing it felt to be such an important part of the school newspaper. I am also very grateful to be a part of the school’s golf team. My Freshman year, my friend Jalen one day asked me if I wanted to be a part of the golf team. At the time, I didn’t own any golf clubs, nor had I ever played golf in my life. Regardless, I ended up loving the game. Although it can be very frustrating, it is extremely fun and rewarding. Sometimes I wish I had started golf at a much younger age, rather than starting my Freshman year. Some of my most memorable experiences of high school come from tournaments and the rides to them. The very first time I had shot under a 90 was at a liberal tournament and is one of my most unforgettable tournaments. The varsity team had all shot under a 90 that day and I had shot under a 90 for the first time in my golfing career. If I were to tell all incoming freshmen one thing, I would say to try new things and don’t be afraid to try them, don’t wait until it’s too late.
