With spring sports coming up, some sports such as baseball and track have new additions to the coaching roster.
“One goal I’ve set for myself and the team this year is to get better everyday and see how far that takes us,” Austin Elam, freshman baseball coach said.
This is Elam’s first year coaching for the high school team and so far has had good impressions.
“My first impression is that it seems like a fun group of guys,” Elam said.
The baseball team has also had a change in head coaches.
“Lance so far has not been that different from Ortiz, but that could change. We still have not had an official practice,” Eli Steinmetz, Trade senior said.
The team switched coaches in the middle of preseason.
“It was strange switching coaching in the middle of preseason, but they have handled it well. I have known Lance for 4 years so I have a good relationship with him,” Steinmetz said.
Some coaches have different strategies, but Elam doesn’t want to change much.
“I’m not going to reinvent the wheel or anything, especially at the lower levels. The strategy is to field the ball, throw the ball and catch the ball. On offense we were going to put the ball in play and run hard and then on the mound were going to throw strikes,” Elam said.
Track has also seen some new coaches for the season.
“The new coach in my opinion is doing a whole lot more for this track team because he is strict so it gets us to do the work. He also has us doing conditioning,” Achilles Martin, Trade Senior said.
Steinmetz has high hopes for the season and the team.
“I think the team has a good chance to be pretty good this year. We have a lot of returning players and a lot of talent in our lineup,” Steinmetz said.
Martin has high hopes for himself and his season.
“Personally, I think I will do a lot better than I did last year because I am going to be in better condition. The coach has us working on how to run relaxed which is really good for running fast,” Martin said.
Elam has also played baseball and has a lot of experience.
“I played up to my freshman year of college until I had to medically retire and that’s when I switched to coaching,” Elam said.
Elam has also been coaching for about a while.
“Ive coached summer baseball the last two years, worked as a student assistant on the GCCC staff last year, and started coaching middle school football and wrestling this year,” Elam said.
