How often have you visited the Garden City High School library? It might surprise you to know that many students find the library not only useful for research, but also as a hang out spot or a relaxing place to spend free time. 

Hillary Watson, Librarian at Garden City high school comments, “The amount of kids I see in the library every day can range from 50 to 100. Getting to know them and making meaningful connections is my favorite part of the job.” 

Though for a librarian, there are some obstacles. “In truth, reorganizing books and managing the library can be very mundane, and I would say it is probably my least favorite job. I enjoy spending time with students much more,” Watson adds. 

Students should also know what type of environment the library offers “I like it to feel safe and welcoming, even if it’s not always calm, I just try to make it inviting” Watson shares, “I typically see a majority of upperclassmen, which is fine, I just want students to know that everybody is welcome, whether that be for studying or just hanging out during free time. We have a lot to offer in the library, there is a lot of technology and other resources available, and it’s a great place for a brain break.” Students have also commented on the library environment, “The library generally feels calm, but the vibe can depend on the day and what everybody is feeling. Me and my friends like to come in the mornings just to hang out and bother Ms. Watson, I would definitely recommend it as a place to study or wind down” says Livier Giganista, Senior, Health. 

Elise Spell, Junior, Health, voices her experience “I typically come to the library towards the end of the day. I like doing the activities they have out, and just hanging out in the area. I would describe the environment as safe and welcoming”

“I’m in the library almost every day, I really enjoy being in the library because of the kind and comforting vibe it gives. In the mornings it feels very laid back, but I like to be in here almost all the time. My favorite thing to do is help Mrs. Watson, whether that’s organizing, scanning books, or talking to the people who come in here. Watson comments “There is more to do in here than just books, and if you need something to do after your classwork is done, feel free to ask your teacher to come down and hang out.”
