With homecoming just around the corner, all of the preparations and excitement often lead the people behind it all to go unnoticed. The Student Council is always working hard to bring out the best in a homecoming football game and dance, but this year they faced a few extra challenges.
“I am very excited to be the new student council teacher,” Kylee Hipp, biology teacher, said.
Hipp has joined Luke Swedberg as an instructor for the student council class. The group organizes various activities and events throughout the school year, such as homecoming. Hipp is not alone in her excitement for some change in the class as well.
“We already get along great,” Lindsay Nelson, Health junior, said, “We’ve got a really great group this year.”
This group has been preparing for homecoming week since the start of school. Because of how early into the school year homecoming is, the team is forced to start right away or fall behind.
“We got going very quick this year,” Nelson said, “I was gone the first day, but when I walked in on the second day, they already had so much done.”
The main reason that the members of the student council believe that they have been able to get started so quickly this year, is because of the system Hipp has brought in with her.
“Last year we did everything as one big group and it took longer,” Sydney Bangerter, Health junior, said, “This year though, we split into groups and it has us moving a lot faster.”
Hipp incorporated this system based on her own experience when she was on the student council in high school.
“This is just how I always remembered doing it,” Hipp said, “We sat down and decided that groups were just more efficient.”
The group already on the student council were very open to the changes that Hipp suggested and it is paying off.
“We have a very good group here,” Hipp said, “They are great at delegating, and when stuff has to move around, they are very flexible and adapt to all the changes.”
Besides trying to make the group more efficient, Hipp has another goal for her first year as a student council instructor.
“We really want to increase spirit,” Hipp said, “We want to see the student more engaged with the activities so we are adding a prize for every football game. The people who are the best dressed for the theme or have the most spirit will get called onto the field and receive gift cards for Scooter’s Coffee.”
