On Thursday, October 21, 2025 marching band WAC took place at GCHS. It was a crisp night and the stadium filled with parents, siblings, and teachers. High school marching band competitions are more than just half time shows, to some it is like a second family. It has become an important part of the community in ways nothing else can. They showcase vibrant music, movement, and months of practice and dedication.
Rehearsals start in middle to late June, memorizing confusing formations, learning new music, and making friends. “It’s not just about playing an instrument, it’s about staying in step and remembering your spot on the field, it’s teamwork that makes it memorable.” said section leader Hailey Moreno. Competitions bring together bands from all across Kansas. The bands tried their hardest to impress the judges with their precision and creativity. Performances are judged on musicality, visual effect, marching techniques, and showmanship. This year, Liberal, Hays, Great Bend and Dodge joined us on this journey. All of their goals are the same, to get straight ones. Our marching band scored a one overall with a two in auxiliary and a three in color guard.
Each performance tells a story, sometimes dramatic, sometimes playful-brought to life through music and motion. Parents wave banners, friends cheer, and competing bands encourage each other. The bands adjust their plumes and button their uniforms and take the field. The marching band brings joy to millions all over the world and ultimately creates an atmosphere for people to enjoy music and meet new people. The goofiness that happens during rehearsal is immediately shut off when they hit the field to perform. Competitions add another layer of excitement and challenge. Early mornings and late nights lead to a victory at competitions. Sacrificing weekends to practice music, losing evenings for sectionals. On competition days, nerves and excitement run high. The bands arrive at host schools and prepare for the long day ahead of them. Each band takes the field ready to give it their all. The thrill of performing under stadium lights is unforgettable to some. Marching band builds connections and character. Students learn
leadership, time management, and perseverance. Marching band is a phenomenon not everyone gets to experience.
