The high school career center has been more active on social media this year. TikTok, Instagram and Facebook are all reliable forms to reach targeted demographics. For the Career Center, it’s important to reach not only high school students in Garden City, but also parents. Using social media, the career center can not only produce fun videos for the high school, but also provide important information about upcoming events.
“We want to make sure we’re getting our students and parents the information that they need. So, having consistent, good social media content makes people want to follow us, which means they will see important deadlines and information, which is why we’re trying to grow our followers,” Jenny Hands, Career Center facilitator, said.
The social media pages in the past haven’t been as active, however, this year the pages have really picked up.
“Its always been a goal for us in the Career Center to be more active on social media,” Hands said.
This year, the Career Center decided to prioritize social media because time has recently allowed it.
“It was really just about finding time because we do so many other things to support students. But, we feel like our priority this year is making our space welcoming and social media is one way where our students can see us outside the Career Center and hopefully build a relationship so they can feel comfortable coming in to ask us things,” Hands said.
The people who work for the Career Center work together with students and advisers to make sure the Career Center Social Media is successful and productive. Alma Garcia, Career Center secretary, helps edit the videos.
“It is difficult, I’m learning as I go,” Garcia said.
We are trying to get the students more into following what we put on social media, so we’re using more fun methods to connect while posting informational stuff to keep everyone involved in what we’re doing,” Garcia said.
In the past, the posters and emails have not been as successful as social media is at putting information out to students.
“I think we realized that students see more of the social media. We feel like the emails and posters haven’t been super successful, so social media allows for more of a connection,” Garcia said.
Lily Koksal, Health Junior, is the social media intern for the Career Center
The student aids of the Career Center also play a part in assisting with the social media pages.
“A lot of the juniors and sophomores didn’t know about things such as educational opportunities like the ACT stuff or college visits,” Koksal said.
“We create a video every Friday kind of promoting the Career Center and also monthly PSA videos for the counseling staff. Along with that, if Ms. Garcia needs help promoting schools that come and visit, I help with that too. I think people have fun being able to see themselves online and see the videos they make turn into real impacts.” Koksal said.
The Buffalo Career Center social media pages can be found on Facebook at GCHS Counselors, and on Tiktok and Instagram at Future-Focused Buffs.
